Wassailing Tradition Workshop

Saturday 7th January 2-4pm   Price TBD
Stroud Museum in the Park

Wassailing from door to door was common new year custom in Stroud and surrounding villages in the C19th, and in some villages only died out in the 1950s.  Hence we have a wonderful collection of wassail songs in this part of the county, celebrated by Vaughan Williams when he combined several songs into one to make the well known ‘Gloucestershire Wassail’.  The tradition was one of wishing your neighbours prosperity and good health for the coming year.

This workshop provides an opportunity to find about the tradition and learn the Stroud Wassail song.

The workshop is run by the Single Gloucester Project – set up to make the songs and tunes of Gloucestershire available to all on the GlosTrad website – You can find out more about wassailing and wassail songs on the GlosChristmas website.  The project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
