12 January is shaping up to be an amazing day. There’ll be dancing, music and mummers in the street between 10.30 and 12.30, and again in the afternoon. There’s a whole-day programme of events in St Laurence church, a Wassail song workshop in the Sub Rooms, a procession round the town, music sessions at various pubs around the town, and of course the Wassail ceremonies outside the Subscription Rooms and at the Museum in the Park. So much to see! Head over to our list of street performers to see who’ll be out and about in the streets of Stroud.
For 2018 St Laurence Church forecourt proved a fantastic backdrop to mumming performances by the Stroud Wassail Mummers, the Suffolk Howlers and the Forest of Dean Mummers. Well, for 2019 the lovely St Laurence team have thrown open their doors as an indoor performance space for the day. Various mummers plays, Shepherd’s Crook folk choir, Merrie Morgana medieval dancers, Boss Morris, Clocs Canton, Appleyard and many more. Chairs to sit on and refreshments are provided. What’s not to like?!
Mummers, morris and other street performer folk are signing up for the Wassail. Head over to the Street Performers page to see who’s signed up so far. It looks as though it’s going to be a massive event again, full of song, dance and laughter – and we’ve even got indoor performance space for if the weather turns bad. (In January? Not a chance!) Contact us if you want to join in.
There’s going to be so much new and exciting stuff happening around Stroud on 12 January. Check out the Wintersong Workshop at the Sub Rooms in the morning, and learn some traditional Gloucestershire seasonal songs to drive away the winter blues. Contact Robin for further details.
This winter the Stroud Wassail Mummers will once more bring music, mayhem and laughter to the Five Valleys. If you fancy having a go, then come and sing and act with us. No pay. Unsocial hours. Unreasonable boss…. What’s not to like? Contact the Slavemaster for further details.
Only six months before the next Wassail. Here is a reminder of what it is all about. We are looking for performers for next year… whatever your act… if you have talent to entertain folk… then we need you! We also need sponsors, venues, retail partners and anyone prepared to help out. Please get in touch and be part of this event!

Yes, it’s Wassail planning time again. If you’re a performer of any kind and are interested in getting involved, then please contact us – we’d love to hear from you. Or if you have a venue that might be used for performances or workshops, or if you just want to add your name to the list of sponsors, then please do contact us. Here’s a video showing the sort of stuff we got up to last year – enjoy!
With some 34 morris sides and mummers plays, rumour has it that Stroud Wassail has become the largest Wassail in the UK. We can’t verify that, but we were pretty impressed by the number of sides that came from places as diverse as Devon, Suffolk, Leicester, Birmingham and Cardiff to join in. We had a fantastic day, with members of the public joining in, making it a true community event.
We’ve got a brand new Stroud Mummers Play; we’ve got a beautiful new Five Valleys Wassail song, written especially for us by Johnny Coppin; we’ve got a very badly-behaved inebriated horse who will steal your heart and your cider; and we’ve got a bunch of wassailers who are happy to turn out on a mid-winters night to entertain YOU! Come and say hello to us on our fantabulous Stroud Wassailers tour – coming to a pub near you.
